Tennessee Organizations Get Counted! - Girls Inc. of Chattanooga and ACE Mentor

Aug 06,2015

This past month we have been featuring mentoring highlights from the Be Counted! Campaign. We have been getting amazing numbers counted in the system and this time is no different. MWM – TN State Leader Lulu Copeland recently worked with MWM to get Girls Inc. of Chattanooga and the ACE Mentor Program of Southeast Tennessee and North Georgia counted. Girls Inc. of Chattanooga counted 70+ mentors who mentored 75+ girls during their summer camps this year and participated in their STEMposium. The ACE Mentor Program had 25 mentors who mentored 42 girls during their high school mentoring program. Girls Inc. of Chattanooga is a chapter of Girls. Inc. which is dedicated to helping girls grow up to be healthy, intelligent, and independent women. For girls age 6-11, Girls Inc. held 2 month-long STEAM Camps called Girl MADE and Earth Girl. During Girl MADE, the girls engaged in hands-on DIY projects, learned about female inventors and their inventions and even designed and built useful products for their homes, schools, and neighborhoods. They closed out the camp by pitching their ideas to investors. During Earth Girl, the participants studied the Earth’s food, water, air and land resources and conducted STEAM related experiments, as well as created GO Green initiatives for their families and peers. At the end of the camp, the girls held a Farmer’s Market selling crafts, fruits, and vegetables. For girls age 12-18, Girls Inc. held two-week camps called STEAM Park and Fuel for Thought. During STEAM Park girls were able to explore engineering, 3D printing technologies, computer aided design software all in relation to building theme park rides. Fuel for Thought allowed girls to learn about nutrition and then create healthy foods for guests to sample. The ACE (Architecture, Construction, and Engineering) Mentor Program helps to mentor high school students and inspires them to pursue careers in design and construction. It is now the construction industry's fastest growing high school mentoring program, reaching over 8,000 students across the nation annually. During the past year, the ACE Mentor Program of Southeast Tennessee and North Georgia, which is lead by Caitlin Moffitt, worked with Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences, East Ridge High School, UTC, and Chattanooga State. At each school they held after-school mentoring programs that introduced students to architecture, construction, and engineering. The students worked with industry professionals to learn about their jobs and gain hands-on experience by working on a real-world project.
