National Girls Collaborative Project – Expanding and Strengthening STEM Related Opportunities
Jan 08,2015“By leveraging our national Collaborative network of partners and encouraging multiple forms of collaboration between many stakeholders, we can, and will, expand and strengthen STEM-related opportunities for girls and women through initiatives like Million Women Mentors.” -Karen Peterson, Chief Executive Officer, National Girls Collaborative The National Girls Collaborative Project consists of Collaboratives serving 39 states, and facilitates collaboration between 12,800 organizations, who serve almost 9 million girls and 4.5 million boys. Each Collaboratives is committed to informing and encouraging girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). During the summer of 2014, twelve NGCP Collaboratives committed 110,000 new Million Women Mentors pledges in conjunction with the Mentor Fireworks initiative! The twelve participating NGCP Collaboratives span the states of Alaska, California, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and the District of Columbia. Each Collaborative has an extensive local network of organizations and individuals that vary in focus and populations served, and includes higher education institutions, community-based organizations, and private non-profits. Through this vast network the participating NGCP Collaboratives are supporting all five pathways for mentoring: face-to-face, online, internships, workplace mentoring, and sponsorships. Collaborative team members are committed to maximizing access to shared resources, and one of the most important untapped resources are the million women STEM mentors that we know are in our communities. Throughout 2015 and beyond NGCP Collaboratives will be connecting with individuals and organizations in their network to encourage women across the United States to join Million Women Mentors, and fulfill their Collaborative’s pledge. NGCP will continue to encourage additional Collaboratives to join the movement and will support the partners of the Million Women Mentors initiative through our unique NGCP resources and network.
